Summit Hiking Trails Win Grant

Hiking trails along the Passaic River Parkway in Summit will be enjoying some TLC in 2015. Funded by a $10,000 grant from the Overlook Medical Center Healthy Neighborhoods Initiative, the Summit Environmental Commission and The Summit Conservancy are collaborating with Union County Department of Parks and Recreation professionals to improve these trails and promote their use. Planned improvements will beautify the trails and increase their visibility.
This exciting project includes establishing a trailhead at the often overlooked New Providence Avenue entrance to the trails, located immediately before the Summit Transfer Station. Invasive plants will be removed and replaced with native plantings, and an informational kiosk containing a trail map installed. New Union County signage and a bench will also be added. The trails will be cleaned up and “blazed” with trail markings all the way to the Passaic River.
Many longtime residents have no idea bucolic trails exist so close to their homes, but local wildlife is enjoying them. On a recent visit, Betty Ann Kelly, the Union County Environmental Specialist, identified the paw prints of a fox in the snow.This project aims to make sure all residents are aware of the trails, to encourage their use and to increase the community’s participation in maintaining and enhancing the trails. Work is expected to be completed in late fall of 2015.
